This article will present the Mountain bike review; one of the most well-known type of bicycle we know today. Unlike road bikes, mountain bikes are specifically designed for rough terrains. Almost all mountain bikes have common characteristics that offer great performance on rough

Mountain biking is roughly broken down into four categories: cross country, downhill, free ride, and trials/street riding. Each has differing levels of safety-consciousness with different types of mountain bikes and riding gear.

For the purpose of shock absorption and additional traction, all mountain bikes uses wide and knobby tires. In the past few years, full front and real suspension is gradually becoming a common feature of all mountain bikes. As you can see in the picture below that the handlebars has got bar ends. But today, lower handlebars or risen handlebars ( as in case of road bicycles) is becoming more popular in comparison with straight handlebars.

Mountain bike Design

Mountain bikes are available in different designs but it can be classified into various categories like

Hard Tail: with this design, the bike has no rear suspension. It only has front suspension.

Soft Tail: Unlike hard tail, it has some rear suspension and uses flex of the frame rather than pivots.

Fully Rigid: this type of mountain bike has got no suspension. It is fully rigid and has a fixed gear.

Full Suspension: This type of mountain bike has got both rear and front suspension and it also has got rear shock and linkage to move the rear wheel on pivots.

Tire design

Most of the mountain bikes uses 559 mm wheels, although the measurements are not necessarily accurate. In some countries, mountain bikes have got 28 inch wheels like in Europe. For dirt jumping, 24 inch wheels are generally used. Sometimes both wheels of the bikes have got varying sizes to offer more variety and design.

Most of the mountain bikes have a 24 inch wheel for the purpose of dirt jumping. 24 inch wheels are also used for freeride bikes as well. But in these free rides, a 24 inch wheel is used as a rear wheel which makes the bicycle more maneuverable. Once, 29 inch wheels were used for Cross Country. However, these 29 inch tires are now becoming more common.

An average mountain bike has several additional features compared to a regular bicycle. These include larger number of gears, knobby tires, a wider handle bar and often some form of suspension for the tires. A mountain bike skeleton is called a chassis, a term that refers to the frame, fork and suspension as one unit. A chassis is generally constructed using lightweight materials such as carbon fiber.

These bikes are often equipped with a large number of gears, with some models being equipped with as many as 27 gears. The lower range of gears helps mountain bikers climb steep hills or obstacles. Mountain bikes use sprocket technology that makes changing gears easier, and shift levers that automatically move up or down, one gear at a time.

A mountain bike usually has both a front and a rear suspension. The suspension acts as a shock absorber for both the rider and the bike. Based on the type of suspension, mountain bikes can be classified into three main categories: Hardtail (frame with no rear suspension, often has a front suspension fork), Fully Rigid (sub-type of hardtail, with a rigid fork) and Dual or Full suspension (front suspension fork and rear suspension integrated into the frame).

Some mountain bikes may also be fitted with bar ends on the handlebars, especially in the case of flat straight handles bars. However, with an increasing preference for riser handlebars, bar end extensions are being used in smaller numbers. These bikes are commonly available with a wheel size of 26 inches (660 mm). Recently, larger wheel sizes of 29 inches (737 mm) have also been introduced. The larger wheels usually roll better over obstacles, but they reduce the maneuverability of the bike.

While a variation of the cantilever brakes is found on most mountain bikes, some of these, especially those with suspension systems, have disc brakes. With a large choice in parts available for mountain bikes, it is important to research your requirements, before shopping around to get the best prices.

Tire: they are on the outer part of the rim. They make contact with the road while riding and also provide a grip. The tires have to be selected carefully with care.

A huge variety of tread patterns are being manufactured to suit different needs and for different conditions in the mountain bike tires. The different types of tire patterns available in the market are: slick street tires, snow studded, street tires with a center ridge and an outer tread, fully knobbly, rear-specific, and snow studded, front-specific.

These mountain bike tires can be specially designed to suit the bike in dry weather or wet weather and also according to the terrain whether it is hard, soft or muddy conditions. There are many other designs that are applicable in all kinds of weather and roads. For the same application, there are also light tires that are more expensive and have less or no rolling resistance.

For free rides and downhill descents a new kind of sticky rubber mountain bike tires are available. These tires may wear out very fast but they are extremely useful during cornering. There are tubeless that run at lower air pressure which improves traction and also rolling resistance. Tire manufacturers for mountain bikes are in plenty. A brand may be selected to suit the users’ needs.
